Royal roots for Coronation celebration
A tree was planted in our school grounds to commemorate the King’s Coronation at a celebration held on Friday 5 May.
Dressed in traditional red, white and blue to mark the occasion, the children spent the morning planting daffodil bulbs and sunflower seeds, as well as the special tree, which was planted in honour of the King.
They also made their own sandwiches and decorated biscuits ready for our afternoon tea party, where the King’s health was toasted, and the children enjoyed a dance in the school’s specially decorated hall.
In addition to enjoying the activities on the day, the children spent the weeks leading up to the Coronation creating a timeline to give context to the event.
“This is such a historic event that we created our own timeline following events from the King’s birth to the present day,” explained Assistant Headteacher Sandie Gordon. “It was important for our children to see a framework for understanding and organising this historical period.”
Other GLF schools celebrating the Coronation included Manor Primary School, where the children enjoyed an RAF fly past, and Windmill Primary School, where they buried a time capsule.
At Danetree Primary School, the children took part in a King’s Parade, while at Salfords Primary, Marden Lodge, and Warren Mead, the children dressed as royalty for the day, and at Frogmore Junior School they posed for photographs with a life-size cut-out of the King.
Glyn School’s celebrations included a Coronation Staff Bake Off competition, and Cordwalles Junior School’s children each received a commemorative medal, while children at Pine Ridge and Lorraine wore red, white and blue, and at Banstead Infants they took part in the Big Help Out.
